Sarah Engler is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Zurich (Research group ‘Comparative Politics with a focus on Empirical Democracy Research’) and the Centre for Democracy Studies Aarau (ZDA) since January 2019. She received a PhD from the University of Bern in August 2018. In her dissertation, she investigated how party strategies affect the survival of centrist anti-establishment parties in Central and Eastern Europe. In spring 2017, she was a visiting researcher at the European University Institute in Florence. She is part of the Democracy Barometer – team that measures the quality of democracy in more than 70 democratic countries. In addition, she works on a new project on the politicization of democratic principles in Europe. Other research interests include populism, party systems and party polarization in Western and Eastern Europe.
