Curriculum vitae

Julia Maynard is a PhD Candidate at the University of Michigan, and she is working with Professor Jonathan Slapin on a SNIS funded project on text analysis in the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) at the University of Zurich. This project looks at how the Court uses “European Consensus” as a legal tool to decide cases- this is an international and multi-disciplinary project that combines both political scientists and legal scholars. Her dissertation focuses on measuring the positions of individual Members of Parliament (MPs) through social media data. She looks at differences between Facebook and Twitter data, analyzing how MPs from France, Germany, and the UK strategically use social media based on demographic and institutional differences.

Prior to her time at the University of Zurich and the University of Michigan, Julia received her masters from McGill University in Quebec, Canada. During her time at McGill, Julia did field work in France and Germany, interviewing party elites. Julia also holds a BA from the University of Portland in Political Science and French Studies.
