Curriculum vitae

Mariken van der Velden is a researcher at the Chair of Public Policy. She will receive her PhD Degree (expected summer 2017) from the Department of Political Science and Public Administration at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, where she still is involved in the High Risk Politics Project. She has been a visitor at Department of Politics and International Relations of the University of Oxford and at the Department of Political Science of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

In her doctoral thesis, she studies the intersection of electoral competition and elite cooperation. Focusing on how political parties navigate the tension to govern together, but compete for votes alone - the so-called coalition dilemma - her research centers around communication as an instrument of party competition. As a researcher at the IPZ, she will broaden her research from party competition coalitional systems to the politics of compromise. One part hereof focuses on citizens' evaluations of compromise, while the others investigate the strategic explanation of compromises by political elites.
